An ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) is a space separate from the main residence but attached to the main house. They may be detached from the main residence or attached, for example, to a separate guest or service suite or garage conversion. ADUs are typically used as rental units, in-law suites, or to accommodate aging family members. They can also be used as a Home office or for overnight guests. ADUs are becoming increasingly popular in adding housing to urban areas while preserving the character of single-family neighborhoods.
